Firefighters battled a stubborn blaze that climbed into the attic of a Roberts Street house and destroyed part of its roof.
No one was injured during the fire, which started on the morning of Oct. 19.
Ray Delcourt, Ladysmith’s fire Chief, said the house began burning after the homeowner used a torch for plumbing work.
Delcourt said the source of the fire was elusive as flames shifted throughout the building’s interior. Firefighters eventually got the blaze under control with the help of a ladder truck.
During the incident, thick, white smoke billowed up from the one-storey home in the 500 block of Roberts Street. The plume could be seen for blocks.
Bystanders watched as Ladysmith firefighters surrounded the structure and sprayed it using hoses.
The fire did not damage an adjacent home.
Delcourt said a husband and wife were living in the house, which is now uninhabitable due to the fire. The homeowners are fully insured, he added.
