A Nanaimo father is dead after his ATV went off a trail and rolled in a remote area north of Ladysmith.

The 60 year old was first discovered by his adult son on Oct. 1 at around 10:30 p.m., police said. Family and friends had started a search when the man did not return home.

Rescuers were called shortly after the discovery to the accident site off of Spruston Road near MacKay Lake.

The man was on his own picking salal, an edible leafy plant, and had been expected home that afternoon.

Police said he became pinned under the vehicle, which appeared to have flipped after it left the path and went down an embankment. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“We don’t suspect alcohol was a factor in this. The man was working so we just think it was an unfortunate accident,” said Cpl. Doug Brayley with Ladysmith RCMP.

At the family’s request, the name of the deceased has not been released.

Search and rescue crews from Ladysmith and Nanaimo, police, firefighters and paramedics all responded to the call.
