Swine flu patient admitted to NRGH

VANCOUVER ISLAND – The Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) today confirmed its first case of a hospital admission related to a case of H1N1 Human Swine Flu.
The patient is currently admitted at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. The patient was admitted to hospital Friday, June 26 with severe respiratory illness, and subsequent tests from the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) confirmed H1N1. The patient is currently listed in critical condition but has stabilized and is improving. The patient has not traveled recently and appears not to have any immediate contacts who are, or who have been, sick. The patient does have other underlying medical conditions, which predispose the patient to increased severity of illness due to infection.
All standard and required infection control procedures are being followed, including placing the patient in a single occupancy room for isolation purposes. Staff and physicians are wearing gowns, gloves and individually fitted masks when providing care.
Since H1N1 was first identified in Mexico in late April, there have been 31 confirmed cases of this flu on Vancouver Island, including this one case that has required hospital admission. The vast majority of these cases have had typical influenza symptoms and have not required additional treatment beyond what would be required for ‘regular’ flu, including self-isolation and bed rest.
