Book Review

Offshore, by Vancouver Island author Catherine Dook, tells the offshore adventures of Catherine, her husband John, and two other men named John on their boat the Inuksuk.

Offshore doesn't engage readers right away, but things soon get a little more exciting as the story progresses. From a plastic sheep to thrift store bingeing, Catherine is hilarious but more relatable to those of an adult audience. It would have been nice to have more description on the relationships between characters and less on things that weren't as important, such as ingredients for a recipe and where each one was located. The boat lingo was a little hard to follow, but probably wouldn't have been a problem at all for those who are familiar with it. In addition to their offshore adventures, Catherine and John also travel up to Yellowknife in an old van. On the back of the book it said that Catherine, John, John and John end up making it to Hawaii on their boat, but they never reach that destination. Offshore isn't a book you can't put down, but it is fairly enjoyable and has a few laughs with Catherine's infectious sense of humour.
