Theatre hosts fundraiser

Chemainus Theatre Festival is gearing up for its more glamorous fundraiser of the year — Winter Wonderland.

“It is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” said Randal Huber, the managing director for the theatre. “We rely on our fundraising efforts. Professional theatre in Canada is just not pay its own way.”

On Nov. 7, the theatre’s Playbill Dining Room will be turned inside out and filled up with a wine lounge, dessert table, chocolate fountain and a martini bar.

“The room is going to be fabulous,” Huber said. “It’s just going to be beautiful. The decor will be pretty amazing.”

It is a formal event. Although the theatre has put on a gala event several times, this year’s is a bit different.

Instead of the sit down dinner there will be plenty of hors d’oeuvres, including buffalo tar tar. A change in format means more people can come, and more can be done.

Watch out for David Attwod, who will be doing roaming magical illusions. Luv Train (Larry and Virginia Blatchford, with Ryk Ryce) are performing live.

For those who were particularly enthralled by Michael Delamont’s performance in Oklahoma as Jud this summer, this event is for you. The singer and actor makes a special guest appearance at the fundraiser.

“People raved about him all summer,” Huber said.

There is a sushi bar planned, and a silent auction as well.

“We’ve got tons of great stuff,” Huber said. “We’ve got lots of art.”

There are overnight packages up for grabs, kayak rentals, spa items and more.

“We’re going to have some amazing raffles,” Huber said.

Grant Jewellers donated a one carat ring. It will be kept in a glass box, and people can buy a ticket that gives them a key. Everyone tries their key in the lock and the winning key unlocks the box.

Organizers are also planning to auction off a seven day Alaskan cruise for two and a Robert Bateman print.

Tickets for Winter Wonderland Nov. 7 are $75 each and include a $50 tax receipt. Event starts at 7 p.m. Call 1-800-565-7738 to book tickets.
