The fiddle communities of Vancouver Island are gearing up for the third annual Vancouver Island Fiddle Camp, which happens hot on the heels of the 2010 Olympics.

From March 12 to 14, more than 80 fiddlers and several nationally renowned fiddle teachers will gather in Cowichan Lake for a weekend of learning new tunes and connecting with other musicians.

And fiddle fans can help make it happen.

Two upcoming Cowichan shows are scheduled as fundraisers for camp bursaries.

Patti Lamoureux and Geoff Horrocks will perform together in Chemainus and Duncan, with part of the proceeds going toward fiddle camp bursaries.

A three-time Canadian Grand Master fiddling champion, Lamoureux is known for her effortless delivery of some of the best traditional Canadian fiddle music of all time. She was the first woman and Western Canadian to attain the crown. Horrocks, meanwhile, is billed as one of the best traditional pianists in the country. He has played shows with some of Canada’s great musicians including Mark Sullivan, Gordon Stobbe, Calvin Vollrath, Shane Cook and Jacinthe Trudeau.

The pair play the Dancing Bean in Chemainus 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10. A Duncan Garage Showroom concert is set for Wednesday at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15.
