Rembering the fallen solider
At least one seat will remain empty at the Rotary Club of Ladysmith’s veterans dinner this week.
The symbolic gesture is in recognition of Douglas Thicke, a bomber pilot from Saltair who died in the Second World War. He attended Ladysmith Secondary School before joining the Royal Canadian Air Force.
In 1944, Thicke was returning from a bombing mission over Germany when his aircraft crashed and he died. He was 21.
On Friday (Nov. 13) diners are expected to fill the seats at Eagles Hall to recognize both Thicke and all veterans who paid for freedom with their lives.
“It’s to continue to remember, to continue to appreciate the sacrifices,” said Guy Bezeau, president of the Rotary Club of Ladysmith.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner is scheduled for 7 p.m. The evening will also include musical and other performances as well as several speakers.
Paul McNicholls, a local enthusiast of military history, also plans to give a presentation to the diners.
Tickets to the dinner are $20 and expected to sell out. They are available at Grant Jewellers, the Ladysmith legion or from rotary members. For information, phone 250-245-0789 or 250-245-8078.
