The Cowichan Valley Capitals paid tribute to a special fan with a victory.

The Caps dedicated their Friday night B.C. Hockey League game at Cowichan Arena to Mary Smith, 28, who died Tuesday night from complications due to the H1N1 virus, and defeated the Merritt Centennials 6-3. A two-minute silence was observed in honour of Smith before the game.

It took a while for the Caps to get untracked, as Merritt took a 1-0 lead after the first period and held a 2-1 advantage early in the second.

Curtis Gedig sparked a string of three Caps’ goals in four minutes that changed the momentum. Rajan Sidhu and Anthony Perdicaro followed in short order.

Nick Anderson and Taylor Paziuk added goals early in the third to put the game away.

Jackson Garrett had the Caps’ other marker.

The Caps are still in the basement of the Coastal Conference but will try to start making up some ground when they host the Alberni Valley Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Victoria Grizzlies pay a visit to Cowichan Arena Wednesday at 7 p.m. and the Caps complete a four-game homestand next Saturday, Nov. 28 at 7:30 p.m. with a rematch against Alberni.
