Wall of Fame inductees for 2009 announced
Wall of Fame inductees for 2009, from left, include: Preston Bruce (represented by Garry Bruce), Glen Harper, Native Sons soccer team 1932-33 (represented by Ernie Elliott), Richard Peter (represented by Gloria Peter) and Bill Robinson.
The valley's amazing sports history is amply represented by the five inductees into the North Cowichan-Duncan Sports Wall of Fame.
Preston Bruce, Glen Harper, Duncan Native Sons soccer team of 1932-33, Richard Peter and Bill Robinson will have their plaques added to the wall in the new Cowichan Aquatic Centre.
They will join the inaugural 2008 inductees Greg Adams, Doug Bodger, Bill Keserich, Bill Murray, Laurelee Kopeck, Lynne Beecroft, Al Wilson, Doug and Georgina Garriock, Fernando Correia and Tanya Clarke-Young.
A large gathering of local politicans, community leaders and families and friends of the indiuctees attended the ceremony Saturday night at the Island Savings Centre's Heritage Hall.
"This is a very special night for the athletes, their families and this community,'' said North Cowichan Mayor Tom Walker.
A special surprise was the presentation of the Jackson Cup that the Native Sons won but never had their name engraved on the trophy. That oversight has since been corrected.
