Torrential downpours hit so hard during Saturday’s Island Ladies’ Field Hockey Association games that scuba gear almost became a required piece of equipment for players.

The Div. 2 Cowichan Cardinals waded through the flooded Cowichan Sportsplex water-based turf for a 4-2 win over Oak Bay.

Play slowed to a crawl in the first half and Oak Bay appeared to be the stronger team, firing several shots on goal and scoring first.

But guest players April Keller and Sandy Carriere and regular Karlie O’Connor reversed the Cardinals’ fortunes with goals before the half.

Keller stepped up to slam in a one-timer in the second half to keep the momentum going.

Jill Roberts received player of the game honours and Chantelle McGeachy displayed great skill to keep the opposition scrambling.

The Div. 3 Cowichan Stellars were in the same boat, so to speak, with a game against the Oak Bay Devils in horrific weather and motored to a 5-0 win.

Kristie Keller started the scoring with a blast near the top of the circle. Jill Dayton then slipped a slow one through the goalie’s pads and cemented the team’s dominance on a penalty stroke. Sandy Carriere and April Keller added the final two goals.

The Div. 1 Cowichan Flickers lost a hard-fought game to the Rebels 4-2.

Rebels jumped ahead 2-0 at the half. The undermanned Flickers, with only one sub, fought back on goals by Jaime Court and Courtney Campbell.

The many subs available to the Rebels finally took a toll on Cowichan and resulted in two late goals.

Pickup goalie Angeliou Johnson filled in admirably, making many key saves. Kate Lindsay worked tirelessly and Katrina Waldron was voted player of the game by the opposition.
