Cowichan soccer side lands two key recruits
Cowichan Div. 1 Vancouver Island Soccer League team coach Glen Martin couldn’t have landed two better recruits.
Martin hit the jackpot with the signings of two top-notch players that virtually assures Cowichan will be a better team this season.
With just 13 of 20 players returning, Martin had some significant holes to fill. He did better than he could have possibly imagined with the additions of defender Tyler Hughes and goalkeeper Kevin James.
Hughes, 28, has just returned after playing four-and-a-half seasons of professional soccer in Sweden.
Needless to say, Martin is thrilled to have someone of Hughes’ ability on the team.
“He’s an amazing player,’’ said Martin. “There’s no doubt he’s the best player in the league.’’
Hughes is a Gorge boy, but looking forward to taking on his former club.
“He’s been running my training sessions and helping out,’’ said Martin. “In our league, he could pretty well play where he wants.’’
The other key acquisition is James, 34, from the Vantreights club to replace the departed Rob McIntyre. James, who lives in Cobble Hill, has been in the Vantreights’ system for about 15 years and still wanted to play in Div. 1 so Martin was happy to oblige.
Martin has also added young Govinder Innes, 16, Jordi Fisher, Aaron Lomas and Kevin Jones from Div. 2, among others, that should give him depth at many roster spots. “I’ve done pretty good recruiting in the off-season,’’ chuckled Martin.
The one major loss will be Darcy Kulai. Matt Arnett and Stu Barker have left to join rival Sooke.
