Third time’s the charm.
Organizers of the Gord Closson Fall Classic oldtimers’ fastball tournament taking place this weekend at Glenora’s Waldon Park had to draw up the schedule not once, not twice, but three times after a pair of teams dropped out.
“Hopefully, this is the last time,’’ quipped organizer Leanne Closson Tuesday after the Smithson team from Victoria announced it wasn’t playing.
The eight-team event now begins Friday with the Gators taking on Dogpatch and the Rangers facing the Cougars in games at 6:30 p.m.
Defending champion Just Jake’s opens against the Buzzards at 9 a.m. Saturday. Romeo’s meets the Spartans at the same time.
Games at 11 a.m. pit the Cougars against the Gators and Dogpatch against the Rangers. The 1 p.m. draw has the Spartans tangling with Just Jake’s and the Buzzards squaring off against Romeo’s.
At 3 p.m., it’s the Cougars vs. Spartans and Gators vs. Just Jake’s. The day concludes with Dogpatch against the Buzzards and the Rangers against Romeo’s at 5.
The teams will then be seeded for the single elimination playoff round Sunday. Games will be played at 9 a.m., 11, 1 p.m. and the final is scheduled for 3.
As for the usual charitable donations raised during the tournament, “I think we’re going to do a combination of a bunch of things,’’ said Closson.
“Everybody pitches in,’’ said Joe DiLalla, Closson’s right-hand man. “Everybody’s got a job to do. We’ve done it so many times everything just flows together.’’
