Cowichan settles for a rare result

A tie game in cricket is about as likely as the Vancouver Canucks winning the Stanley Cup.
Cowichan and Incogs played to a rare tie in the final game of the Victoria and District Cricket Association Saturday at St. Michael’s University School in Victoria.
When reality sunk in about the outcome, the books were checked and double-checked. Both teams were left in disbelief when the final result was confirmed.
“The points were shared and nobody went home happy,’’ noted Cowichan’s David Norrish.
Cowichan won the toss and elected to put Incogs up to bat first.
It looked for a time like Cowichan might hold Incogs below triple digits which would have been miraculous.
As it turned out, Incogs were kept to a small total on the relatively short pitch. The last few batsmen ran themselves out, leaving 145 on the board and a score that Cowichan felt comfortable chasing down.
Mike O’Flaherty and Adam Benning got off to a steady start. O’Flaherty was dispatched at 35 by Incogs’ frontman John Wenman and Rod Hender settled in to replace him.
Benning went down at 11, all singles, and Hender suffered a similar fate shortly after that, putting Cowichan at 52 after the loss of three wickets.
The score reached 142 for eight when the hair-raising finish occurred that left the teams tied.
Next up is the 20/20 final match against Albion at Victoria’s Beacon Hill Park. It will be preceded by a Victoria versus Honolulu match.
