Enormous run total crushes Oak Bay

Cowichan ended the home portion of its Victoria and District Cricket Association season with a 95-run victory over Oak Bay at Shawnigan Lake.

The league standings were very tight heading into the game so Cowichan needed a win to stay in contention. The players delivered.

“It was again a complete team effort with everyone making a contribution,’’ noted team member Mike Andrews.

The result moved Cowichan’s record to nine wins and four losses and guaranteed a place in the playoffs.

Cowichan batted first and scored a whopping 288 for seven wickets in 45 overs. The opening partnership of Mike O’Flaherty and Adam Benning produced 169 runs and put Cowichan in great shape.

Rick Fletcher scored a great innings of 51.

Oak Bay started aggressively, but the first wicket fell at 25 for five overs. The bowling of Gord Penney, O’Flaherty, Rod Hender and Benning finished off Oak Bay at 193 in 37.2 overs.

Cowichan plays Incogs Saturday at St. Michael’s.
