Sunshine fails to remove cloud from cricket result

Neither the sunny skies, nor the return of Stuey Munger as wicketkeeper could make a difference for the Cowichan cricket club last weekend.

Victoria United beat the local side by 81 runs in Beacon Hill Park Saturday

Their openers took the score to 44 before Gordy Penney struck for the first wicket. At the other end Geoff Benning replaced Shelby Newcombe and with the score at 64 he dismissed the other opener with Sunil Nagaraj taking a brilliant one-handed catch in the gully. Sitting at 64 for 2 after 13 overs seemed reasonable but the bowlers were unable to contain the batting of K. Cheema.

Their final total was 253 for 8 wickets. Cowichan dropped two catches and gave away 18 wides.

Cowichan then went to but but was all out for 172 in 41.4 overs.

The result clinches first place for United and the Payne Cup for the round robin winners.

However, Cowichan can still win the Colonist cup and be the league champions.
