Organizers so happy with amateur they want to do it again
B.C. Amatear winner Daniel Brown introduces himself to his new hardware.
The 108th B.C. Amateur Championship at Duncan Meadows Golf & Country Club wrapped up in dramatic fashion last week and the owner of the golf course said it went off so well he’d like a repeat.
“It’s absolutely something we’d like to do again,” said Ming Hui. “I think it went very well.”
“The players really enjoyed the course and there was some great scoring and a golf tournament of that calibre is quite unique with us.”
So unique that last week marked the first time the prestigious event was held in the valley.
“It is the premier event for the province and we got to host it,” said Hui, who followed several golfers during the tournament.
Hui said he was hard-pressed to come up with a favourite moment during the several days of play.
“I think the highlight was to have these great players play our golf course because some of them were probably the best players in Canada,” he said.
“Being able to follow them and watch them during the final round really was something.”
Still, Hui said the most dramatic moment came on the last day of play.
“The turning point was when Brady Johnson hit his tee shot into the hazard on hole 13 — that was unbelievable,” Hui said.
Before that shot, Johnson was the clear leader with a five-shot cushion.
He double-bogeyed the hole and shot two-over on the par 3 16th hole.
He needed a birdie on one of the final two holes to force a play-off, but it was not to be.
The meltdown allowed Daniel Brown, of Kelowna, to capture British Columbia’s top amateur golf title by one shot after he fired a final round 5-under par 67.
Hui said golfers only had themselves to blame for mis-hits because Duncan Meadows was more than up to par for the championship.
“The golf course was in prime condition,” he said.
“I mean we had the greens rolling between 10 and 11 (on the stimpmeter, a device used to measure the speed putting greens) and it was great.
Johnson had to settle for second place, while last year’s winner Eugene Wong, won a four-hole playoff to clinch third spot.
