An excellent week of activity is shaping up in Cowichan with the staging of the 12th annual Coast Salish Games and second annual youth conference.

“We had a great first day,’’ noted spokesman Joey Caro. “We had a great turnout for the first day of the conference and we are expecting an even bigger turnout for the actual games when they begin on Wednesday.’’

The host Coast Salish Employment and Training Society held its annual meeting and 19 member chiefs joined the youths in a parade around the Si’em Lelum fields during the opening ceremony.

Many chiefs also gave speeches. Member of Parliament Jean Crowder and Cowichan chief Lydia Hwitsum were among the speakers.

There were many interesting workshops and craftspeople sold their wares in front of the Si’em Lelum gym.

Presentations were made by the RCMP, elders, health workers, career planners, mental health workers, weavers and story-tellers.

The Hul’qumi’num Treaty Group made an historical presentation about the lands located on southeast Vancouver Island.

Tuesday’s agenda included more fun events, afternoon workshops and an evening bone game.

Games events include soccer, canoe races and track and field for U7, U12, U14 and U17.
