High strikeout total deceiving

Normally when a pitcher records 16 of 21 outs by himself, a victory is a foregone conclusion.
But it didn’t happen that way last Tuesday night at the Cowichan Sportsplex for Craig Street Brew Pub Masters pitcher Rick Smith. He struck out 16 but, in between, rival Just Jake’s recorded 11 hits to beat Smith and the masters 7-6 in a Nanaimo Senior Men’s Fastball League game.
Despite Smith’s high strikeout rate, Jake’s jumped into a 6-1 lead after four innings. The masters fought their way back into the game despite only getting five hits off Jake’s pitchers Chris McCormick and Trevor Gicas, but fell just short.
Joey Massingham was the hero for Jake’s, going four-for-four. “Everything he hit, he hit the gap,’’ said Joe DiLalla of the masters, who has also worked with Jake’s as a coach and knows all about Massingham’s abilities first-hand.
Ryan Kline was also a force. He went three-for-four with a home run and accounted for four RBIs.
Brooks Robinson got into the act by going two-for-three. Gicas, who launched a two-run homer, and Jackson Wilson had the other Jake’s hits.
Garrett Elliott and Bob Court combined for four of the five masters’ hits. Elliott was two-for-three with three runs and an RBI while Court had a run and two RBIs to go with his two hits.
Smith, who plays for a tournament team in Saskatoon, was one-for-three, scored a run and added an RBI.
Dan Whiteford didn’t record a base hit, but brought in a run during the first inning on a groundout and in the sixth on a sacrifice fly. He also scored a run.
Jake’s has registered Senior C for provincials.
