Dear editor

Far out! A deal in the works with Hudson’s Bay and Cowichan knitters. Isn’t it great what results public responses to do the right thing can effect?

So, being optimists, this deal will go and the future looks good for the iconic Cowichan sweater. Wouldn’t it be sweet for our Liberal government to support the discipline of knitting these sweaters and various first nations designs through its school system? Bring back the craftspeople and artisans that used to facilitate learning in the classrooms and preserve the skills for future generations to come.

Twenty years ago, I worked alongside a beautiful woman, Kay Thomas, who was helping kids learn First Nations crafting at Quamichan. I asked her to knit me a design I had in mind for my own original Cowichan sweater. I still wear this truly unique gift of history in the winter and I often think of her and the legacy she left with every little click of her adeptly worked needles.. Let’s really keep it alive and grow more generations of knitters and do it right here in our schools.
