A pool at Kerry Park makes for a better community
There has been considerable negative commentary about the proposed pool in the south end and I’d like to extend a few contrary arguments and ideas to offer some balance.
The idea that the Duncan pool adequately serves this area is not very convincing.
The cost to any taxpayers from the south end using the facility is doubled due to the two-tiered payment system.
That makes it the most costly publicly funded pool on the Island for residents in our region to use.
Sadly, many residents have opted to use the pool at Juan de Fuca as an alternative, as the drive is only slightly greater and the facility is cheaper and welcoming.
Whether residents are driving in either direction, easy and convenient access, both in proximity and cost, is certainly compromised. Having a pool in our community would allow greater access for all.
Many opponents have focused on the perils of higher taxes and the fact they object to paying for a facility they won’t personally use.
My family does not play hockey or curl, yet I do not object to my tax dollars funding these amenities. I know they are used and enjoyed by many other residents.
These facilities contribute to greater community health and well-being and provide positive recreational opportunities for our residents.
I would hope we can move beyond our parochial self-interest and consider the good of the community when facing these decisions.
Pools provide wonderful fitness, social, rehabilitative and recreational opportunities for a broad spectrum of our population.
Our school children will access the pool, which will offer fitness and water safety.
Our seniors will have social and recreational opportunities to aid in maintaining quality of life.
A pool will provide therapeutic and rehabilitative services for members of our community with injuries, chronic conditions and special needs.
Our youth will enjoy safe and positive social and recreational opportunities.
Surely we can all see the value in that?
If the pool referendum is defeated we will no doubt be re-visiting it again in a few years as public demand for local recreational opportunities increases.
I urge local residents to strongly consider the well-being of the community at large when casting their vote.
Sharon Hall is a local teacher, resident and chauffeur to her children who believes the proposed Kerry Park pool is an positive investment in community.
