Office Politics 101: Calming recession-era nerves

Q: Things are getting a little tense around our office recently; sales have been slow and a few people have been laid off. People who quit aren’t being replaced. I’m feeling nervous. Any suggestions for me?

A: It’s a familiar concern these days, I’m afraid. The impact of the global economic downturn has impacted a great many companies — yours included, no doubt.

I sense that you have a relatively junior position and perhaps have been with the company for just a few years.

Your anxiety, therefore, may be legitimate, although it is encouraging that you are still in your job in spite of some reductions in the number of employees.

First of all, let me suggest you maintain a positive approach to your job and do not, under any circumstances, join the lunchroom chatter with the theme of, “I wonder if I’ll be next?”

If morale is suffering, management is sure to know, but you need to be seen as a team player with a commitment to the company.

Second, although you may very well be busier than ever — possibly assuming some responsibilities of laid-off employees — it is the ideal time to offer to take on a new work assignment.

Problem-solvers are the most loved people in any organization and, if you can raise your profile by making a tangible contribution to the company’s successes, you’ll certainly be appreciated.

And, third, business is all about making a profit.

Do you see inefficiencies, missed markets, padded expense accounts, unnecessary spending and other items that may impact the bottom line?

Take the time to alert management to your observations and always recommend concrete solutions.

It is not enough to point out the problem. You must be prescriptive.

In today’s turbulent job environment, you need to be perceptive and innovative in the way you serve your employer.

Besides, having the reputation as being a hard worker will always be attractive and your boss is sure to go to bat for you in the event of another wave of down-sizing.
