Comox woman dead in backroads motorbike crash

Lake Cowichan Mounties are investigating a motorcycle crash that claimed the life of a 52-year-old Comox woman.
Police said Veronika Lebar was riding with another motorcyclist on the Old Hillcrest Road — part of the Pacific Circle Route between Port Renfrew and Mesachie Lake — late Saturday afternoon when the two became separated.
When the unidentified lead rider reached Mesachie Lake, Lebar did not show up.
The rider backtracked and saw his riding companion’s motorcycle had left the road and hit an embankment near a small bridge, about three kilometres southeast of Mesachie Lake.
Police — who were called to the scene at about 4:30 p.m. — reported several people stopped in an attempt to help the downed rider.
But CPR and other live-saving attempts failed to save the woman who was later pronounced dead at Cowichan District Hospital.
Police said road conditions were good and alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
Lake Cowichan RCMP, Island Traffic Services and a member of the coroner’s office were still investigating the crash Monday.
