• Cowichan Consort Orchestra and Choir’s musical director, Duncan Frater, has given notice the 2009-2010 season will be his last after nine seasons. The Consort’s board is seeking qualified candidates for Frater’s post. • Cowichan-raised Joel Perry, son of locals Gregg and Jennifer, is in New York City training United Nations personnel how to use computer software he helped developed while working for Victoria IT firm Anthony Macauley Associates. Perry, 29, is a graduate of Cowichan’s Sunrise Waldorf School and Frances Kelsey Secondary School.
• Valley heart-transplant and cancer survivor Tina Andersen has received $360 from the sale by Duncan Music of a sound system donated by Dennis Lalonde. Those funds follow cash gained for Dragon Diva and actress Anderson by local songwriter Beverley McKeen during the 2008 benefit called Heart Of The Matter staged in The Mercury Theatre.
• The 25-year-old Cowichan Folk Guild elected its new board of directors during its Oct. 19 annual general meeting. Office administrator Heather Bryant reports Norm Thorne remains CFG president leading singing vice-president Bill Levity Davey, secretary John Thomson, and treasurer Donna Cameron. Folk guild directors are Declan Finnegan, Irish banjoman Chuck McCandless, Marion deCaro, city councillor Tom Duncan, Philip Holmes, Harmony Huffman, singer Tad Ruszel, Monica Foster, arts council boss Longevity John Falkner, actor-technician Tim Crighton and Ernie Thomlinson.
• Duncan’s oldest not-for-profit daycare centre, Arcadian Day Care, is unveiling a new Reggio Emilia inspired preschool program. New executive director, Kate Skye will head up the program overseen by Tim Coogan, president of the Arcadian society and new treasurer Jane Worton.
• Jim and Jackie Barker of the Garden House Foundation are delighted with the $5,766 raised at their second annual charity book sale. Foundation beneficiaries Cowichan Family Life, Cowichan Women Against Violence and the Duncan SPCA will each receive grants of $500. Call 250 743-4627 between April and September if you have books of recent fiction, history books of any vintage, Canadiana (any subject area) or children’s books to donate to next year’s event.
