• The Cowichan Valley Regional District can now brag about having an award-winning web site.
The CVRD won the award of excellence at the Union of British Columbia Municipalities annual gathering last week, beating out all other communities in the province.
“My congratulations go to Chris Ewing and his team that worked on putting that together,” said CVRD Chair Gerry Giles.

• South Cowichan Chamber of Commerce manager Rosalie Power was excited about an opportunity to visit her mom and family in Newfoundland this fall. Mom turns 100 this year back on the rock.
• Hollywood producer Ted Bauman said his recent Cowichan-shot TV mini-series Seven Deadly Sins will air in fall 2010. The $5-million series filmed locally at Bamberton, Chemainus and Ladysmith is headed to the Lifetime network and a Canadian network sale is pending.
• Tiffeny Denny and Matthew Parent of Duncan were among 94 B.C. post-secondary students awarded between $1,000 and $3,500 for their studies. The Vancouver Island University pair each received the award under the B.C. Aboriginal Student Award program.
• New businesses continue to pop up including the new Sunflower Café in Duncan which opened last week under chef and owner Susanne Merrett. Also new in town is the Shoe Warehouse, which is now open at the new Duncan Village complex.
• David Brayden, son of Cowichanians Judy and Alex Brayden, raised $2,700 this summer riding his bicycle 8,700 kilometres across Canada to fundraise for research against multiple sclerosis. Brayden, 25, is in the engineering-physics field. He lives in Burnaby.
• Local artist Olivia Stephens, 23, continues showing her colourful pieces at Duncan’s Coffee on the Moon. The Montreal native and Frances Kelsey high school graduate uses a rainbow of shades in her fantasy pieces at the Moon.
• Valley artists are showing work until Oct. 25 in the juried, multi-media Fine Arts Exhibition and Sale in the historic Ladysmith Waterfront Arts Centre Gallery, 610 Oyster Bay Drive. Cowichan artists showing work include photographer J. Neil Newton and Westholme sculptor Linda Richter.
