Luv Train chugs into CT fundraiser

What’s billed as the benefit bash of the year happens Saturday at the Chemainus Theatre.

Chemainiacs are helping the landmark theatre during the night’s Winter Wonderland auction and gourmet-food fête backed by music from the valley’s Luv Train trio.

“Instead of the traditional dinner auction, this is a late star,” spokesman David Pink said of the 7 p.m. gala.

“We’ve got a fantastic menu of appetizers and hors d’oeuvres from far-flung places plus a buffet of salmon, pawns and sushi,” he said, noting sushi is being made on site by the chef from Kudo’s Japanese Restaurant.

While Victoria magician David Attwood works the Playbill Dining Room, up to 240 patrons can ponder items in several silent auctions before live auction action starts.

Block and raffle items include a one-carat diamond ring donated by Grant Jewelers, a signed Robert Bateman print, plus a seven-day Alaskan cruise courtesy of Cruise Holidays.

“There’s a huge array of stuff,” said Pink, “including an afternoon with (noted Cowichan Bay artist) Arthur and Jessica Vickers.”

Pink’s also pumped about Winter Wonderland’s planned martini bar featuring four-foot ice carving of a martini glass for chilling the real drinks.

A wine lounge, a dessert buffet — complete with chocolate fountains — are also on deck before dancing begins to R&B tunes by Luv Train conductors Larry and Virginia Blatchford, and Ryk Ryce.

Auction items are still being accepted.
