Alt-rocker Matthew Good and his band premiere at the Cowichan Theatre Friday.

Good and crew are sure to lift tunes from their recent platter Vancouver.

Burnaby product Good, 38, led one of Canada’s most successful alternative rock groups in the ‘90s before dissolving the band in 2002.

Since then, he’s chased a solo careers — heard on his eclectic 2003 effort Avalanche, and his ’04 CD White Light Rock ‘n’ Roll Review — and become an activist and blogger.

The candid songwriter now has 11 CDs on his resume, with Vancouver sales pegged at some 800,000.

The triple Juno Award winner saw his song Born Losers from his disc Hospital Music be the free download of the week of July 30 on iTunes in the U.S. and was downloaded some 340,000 times.

Good’s benevolent work includes advocating for the Canadian Mental Health Association and Amnesty International.

In 2007, Good revealed he’s dealing with a bipolar disorder.

He explores his search for balance and happiness on his ’07 album Hospital Music.

His current CD Vancouver probes the city’s impact on himself, his music and the world.

Good’s early career bridged various folk demos and a stint leading folk band The Rochester Kings.

He and axman Simon Woodcock were discovered during an open-mic session at SFU.

That led to some recording time and the Matthew Good Band gelled in Coquitlam in ’93.

They recorded the album Euphony that ushered touring and more recording.

MGB’s 1997 platter Underdogs unleashed hits Everything Is Automatic, Indestructible, and Apparitions.

Website bio about the political animal explains Good’s known in the music industry as a subversive by some, an eccentric by others, and a jerk in still other circles.

Good’s madcap life, and his take on society run amok, may have been revealed when he claimed his website writing “comes from the need inside of me to make fun of people.”

“And my need to make fun of myself. I like writing things that are both intelligent and subversive.

“There’s so much for me to write about — society has become so absolutely ridiculous.”
