The joint will be jumpin’ next Sunday at Pine Lodge Farm as Cowichan’s reputation as a jazz mecca continues climbing.

Impresario Ken Hicks and farm owner Clifford Clarke host pianist Bob Murphy’s swinging band for a concert in Barb’s Garden overlooking Salt Spring Island.

“Foot-stomping jazz is the way to describe the Bob Murphy Band’s sound,” said Clarke.

“Bob plays the Hammond B3 organ and swings like mad, and (Juno Award-winner) Hugh Fraser on trombone gets so excited from the outset he can’t keep still.

“Drummer Dave Robbins is a whirlwind and their long-time friend Don Clark comes back to the valley for a fourth year running to bring outstanding trumpet virtuosity.”

Singer Monique Van Dam joins Murphy’s band “with a style reminiscent of Sarah Vaughan and the upbeat style of the entire group will be so contagious you’ll need to bring your dancing shoes,” promised Clarke.

Jazz lifer Hicks, who recently hosted The Bills at Pine Lodge, said he’s always “absolutely knocked out by the energy Bob, Hugh and Dave have together live.”

“It’s fantastic tempo. There’s as much jazz energy in those three as I’ve seen in 40 years of following jazz.

“Their exciting interaction stems from the Hammond B3 making such vibrant sounds.

“I think it’s better than most instruments for the swing effect it has.”

Hicks noted trumpet titan Clark’s coming from Creston, B.C. to play the gig with Murphy’s mob.

“Don can mould to all styles of music.”

Meanwhile, Hicks is happily helping the Warm Land become a jazz hotbed.

He applauded other local jazz sessions including those hosted by Pat Selman and Sylvan United Church’s Jazz Vespers.

“Once a year we try and have a big jazz effort with a complete band,” Hicks said of Murphy band’s date.

It was heralded by the Phil Dwyer Band’s stand at Maple Bay Marina last year, plus other earlier shows arranged by Hicks (who staged last week’s visit by the Miles Black Quartet.)

“It’s all been memorable, especially doing shows outside.

“The more people come out, the more we’ll bring in.”
