Reid brings down a full house

I didn't have to ask the lip-syncing Johnny Reid fan seated beside me what she thought of Wednesday night's show at the Cowichan Theatre.

So I asked Tonia Hill,15, who had been invited on stage to dance and sing with Reid half way through the second set.

"It was so awesome I almost cried" was the answer.

Indeed, night two of country star Johnny Reid's first headlining nationwide tour had Duncan at his mercy.

Having also seen opening night at Nanaimo's Port Theatre, it's clear the capacity crowd at the community centre brought out the best in Reid and company.

Sure, the background screen and frequent mid-song montages were sometimes an awkward distraction from Reid's considerable abilities as a showman.

But there was plenty of magic to make up for it.

The thunderous sing-a-long commanded for Out Of The Blue and the conclusion of "Missing An Angel" which had Reid, in a moment of silent anticipation, step in front of his microphone and fill the hall with his completely un-amplified natural voice were just two of the show stopping moments that earned standing ovations.

Jack Connolly is Cowichan musician and composer.
