In an effort to cut its greenhouse gas emissions, the Town of Lake Cowichan is looking at purchasing an electric truck.

It’s called the Might-E truck, made by Canadian Electric Vehicles in Errington, just south of Parksville.

At a cost of about $29,000, the Might-E Truck has a top speed of just under 40 kilometres an hour with a payload in town of 1,500 pounds.

“It has enough power to go up Lamb’s Hill,” said Nagi Rizk, superintendent of public works, who was giving the vehicle a test drive on Friday. “It will be used by the parks department.”

The single speed, rear-wheel drive vehicle has a range of up to 100 kilometres on one charge, depending on the terrain, and it can be plugged into a regular electric outlet for overnight recharging.

“What’s nice is it uses regular car batteries,” said Rizk. “It doesn’t have power steering, which you have to get used to.”

Rizk admits he is concerned about the cost of the vehicle.

“It’s great to try to cut our emissions, but the question is how much do people want us to spend for something like this,” he said. “Besides, I’m not sure my budget can handle it.”
