Business leaders from Cowichan will join internationally recognized entrepreneurs during an upcoming forum aimed at keeping local business strong during the recession.
Leadership Tactics for Challenging Times runs 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 28.
“We know the economy is recovering, but recovery in and of itself presents its own challenges, so businesses should be poised to take advantage of some of the opportunities that present themselves — and this forum will allow them to do that,” said Cathy Mailhot, manager at the Duncan-Cowichan Chamber of Commerce.
The local chamber is hosting the forum in partnership with the B.C. Chamber of Commerce, the Leadership and Management Development Council of B.C., and Community Futures Cowichan.
“This particular forum is one of only six held in the province,” said Mailhot.
Guest panelists include Kari Yuers, president of Kryton International; Robert Meggy, CEO at the Great Little Box Company; and Joyce Groote, CEO with Holeys footwear.
“The forum will be very interactive with the three keynote speakers, and there will also be a panel made up of local, successful business people and entrepreneurs,” said Mailhot.
“In the afternoon we’ll have a roundtable discussion about all of the issues and challenges that face local businesses, with idea sharing around them.”
Areas of focus include marketing on a tight budget, recruiting, training and retaining employees, and building a strong network to help guide a company.
“The keynote speakers will make a point of familiarizing themselves with some of the local issues and challenges, so they’ll come prepared, knowing about Cowichan and how business is doing in Cowichan,” said Mailhot, adding continued peer mentoring is hoped to be one of the outcomes of the forum.
The event is open to anyone in the business community and will also provide networking opportunities.
