Dynamic duo ready for Richmond
It’s business as usual for skaters Lauren Fines and Eric Streichsbier, as they get prepared to head to BC Sectional competition in Richmond Nov. 11–17.
It takes hard work and commitment on a daily basis, training off and on the ice with their coach Jan Norman.
They also have other support systems that are crucial to their success; parents, teachers, and the community. Everyone has been great, Tammy Fines and Sherry Streichsbier, their respective moms said.
Fines and Streichsbier have been skating in Port Alberni for eight years and together, as a dance team, for two years. “There was an attempt to put them together when Lauren was eight 8 and Eric, 10 but Lauren wouldn’t have anything to do with boys,” Streichsbier said.
Who knew that a few years later, bringing together maturity and coach Jan Norman would be the ingredients of a successful team in Port Alberni.
Their duo’s first appearance at sectionals last year placed them seventh and recently placed fourth at a Burnaby competition.
They also worked with Aaron Lowe ,top Canadian ice dancer with partner Megan Wing, coaching out of Centre of Excellence in Burnaby. “I think Eric and Lauren are amazing,” coach Norman said.
The two have learned to respect each other and create a good work ethic, Norman said.
“They are training without the luxury of other dance teams pushing them.”
Together, Lauren and Eric definitely have the desire. “Our goal is to move up to prenovice and make it to nationals,” Fines said.
“We love to perform and show our personalities on the ice.”
The sectional competition gives them another opportunity to perform.’
“We are excited to go.” Eric smiles.
“It’s a great feeling to represent our community and share the stage with our peers. We get to connect with other teams and watch and learn.”
They keep their sights realistic. “They know ...with hard work, the expertise of their coach, strong support, learning, developing and with experience they can do it.
