Blizzard bats boom on road in Alberni
Wednesday is colloquially known as hump day, so the Comox Valley Blizzard celebrated on April 30 by crossing The Hump to Port Alberni and beating the Central Island Cutters 8-2.
Blizzard head coach Chris Kenny said his Bantam AAA baseball squad was fired up to play their first road game in over a month, and it showed.
Josh Croft’s new bat was the talk of the dugout as he went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and five runs batted in. In the top half of the first, Croft laced a single into centre to bring home Ashton Martin and put the Blizz ahead 1-0.
In the second inning the visitors erupted for five runs on five hits, a walk and an error.
Clayton Isherwood led off with a double followed by Adam Riley’s single and a free pass to Ryan Fairgray. Martin stroked one down the left field line to score two. With runners on first and second, Croft took Cutters’ pitcher Joey Sabo downtown with a three-run shot to right centre to make it 6-0.
In the fourth, Croft was at it again as a double to the fence brought Martin home from second to run the score to 7-1. Marcus Drewry manufactured the Blizzard’s final run after drawing a walk and stealing a pair of bags. He scored on a Dillon Robson infield ground ball to make it 8-2.
On the mound, Isherwood was having a day himself as he struck out 12 over six innings to run his season record to 2-1.
