Birthday boys bring home bag full of medals for presents

Two dozen members of the Alberni Valley Track Club (AVTC) headed to Victoria last weekend for the Dogwood track and field meet.
The AVTC coaches were happy with their athletes’ results, coach Sharon Macauley said.
Thompson Weegar and Luke Bradley had their birthdays, turning in some great performances to celebrate.
Bradley came home with a bunch of medals: first in javelin, shotput, discus and triple jump, as well as third in high jump.
Weegar came first in shotput with a heave of 8.22 metres, nearly a metre farther than the next competitor.
Graham Villette had a first-place finish in discus with a toss of 26.55 m. Joshua Kurucz bagged a gold medal in javelin (28.71 m).
John Dube got gold in the sprint hurdles.
Connor Smyth should be pleased with his time in the 1500 m, 6:05.07, since this was his first attempt at this event. His brother, Tynan, had a good meet, netting a silver medal in long jump.
In only his second meet, Rylee Mitchell showed that he is a fast learner and fierce competitior, placing fourth in the sprint hurdles, third in javelin, and eighth in the 100 m, in a large field of 10-year-old boys.
Kristoff Muelhenberg made a strong personal best in long jump of 3.08 m.
Laura Macauley battled allergies while throwing javelin, so did not throw as well as last weekend. However, she threw a season-best 40.25 m in discus.
