Catalyst-Port Alberni back in court Tuesday

Round two of the legal fight between Catalyst and the City of Port Alberni could continue on Tuesday, city manager Ken Watson said.
Round one of the Supreme Court legal row took place in Vancouver Sept. 3-4. However, lawyers for the City of Port Alberni never finished making their case, and needed extra time.
Legal counsel for Powell River begin making their case Tuesday, but Port Alberni and the company are asking for time to finish their presentation.
“Our lawyer and Catalyst’s lawyer are going to ask the judge if we can continue tomorrow morning with Powell River,” Watson said. “It’s up to the judge whether we get that hour or so we need to finish or not.”
Earlier this summer, Catalyst initiated a legal challenge against the four municipalities — Port Alberni, Campbell River, North Cowichan and Powell River — citing unreasonably high municipal industrial taxes.
They also posed paying taxes based on their consumption model that would see them pay far less municipal taxes.
The municipalities of North Cowichan and Campbell River have already finished their presentations to the court.
