One dead in highway rollover
KEVIN OSBERG/Special to the News Emergency personnel work the Jaws of Life to extricate two people from a car in the ditch near the Loon Lake turnoff on Highway 4, Tuesday.
An elderly man is dead and his wife suffering from serious injuries following a rollover accident on the Hump, Tuesday afternoon.
Both were from Port Alberni, RCMP Staff Sgt. Lee Omilusik said.
The 76 year-old male driver of a grey 2001 Pontiac died at the scene and his 76 year-old female passenger was airlifted to a Victoria hospital with life-threatening injuries, Omilusik said.
The accident occurred at 3:20 p.m. Tuesday afternoon when the westbound driver failed to negotiate a turn at the Loon Lake turnoff, about five kilometres east of Port Alberni.
The car went off the road, struck a large rock and skidded down into a ditch, ending up on its roof.
Police, fire and ambulance responded, and fire department members had to use the Jaws of Life to remove the victims.
Alcohol is not considered to be a factor in the accident, Omilusik said.
The names of the victims aren’t being released pending notification of next of kin.
