A new Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce building is one step closer to reality.
The chamber is being awarded a federal grant of $700,000 for the replacement of the existing tourist information centre.
The announcement came Thursday from Minister of International Trade Stockwell Day, who announced $6 million in funding for seven projects in B.C.
The money comes from the Community Adjustment Fund.
Chamber president Elliot Drew would neither confirm nor deny the announcement.
“We were positive about the outcome of the application after we submitted it,” Drew said. “But there’s been no official announcement yet, so I can’t comment.”
The money compliments approximately $700,000 from Island Coastal Economic Trust that was approved in June.
The grants represent $1.4 of the $1.5 million the new facility will cost, Drew said.
Meanwhile, discussions between the chamber and Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council to bring them on as a partner in the new building continue, he said.
However, he couldn’t clarify the details of the partnership.
The new chamber building is slated to be built in its existing location, Drew said.
