People make art at Rollin show

People in focus at the Rollin

After apprenticing with a master photographer in New York City, Norman Silverstone opened a studio in Montreal, specializing in portraiture, weddings, fashion and model portfolios. His attention to people is evident in “We the People”, his exhibit at the Rollin Art Centre Gallery.

During his time in Montreal, Silverstone freelanced for several newspapers as well as Architectural Digest.

We The People will show at the Rollin Art Centre Gallery until Tuesday, Nov. 10. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free and the gallery is wheelchair accessible.

Cup and Saucer holds open mic

Poets, writers, storytellers and songsmiths: come and perform your work at the Cup and Saucer (beside Capelli’s) on Thursday, Oct. 22 from 7-9 p.m.

Five minute maximum for each performance. There will be a sign up sheet at the door. No entrance fee; coffee and goodies will be available.

Band members in spotlight

The Alberni Valley Community Band, conducted by Brian Petch, is looking for new members. Particularly needed are brasses, flutes and percussion, but all instruments are welcome.

Local painter honoured

Four paintings by local artist Michael Cleary are part of an exhibition entitled “Treasures” by the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, which opens Oct. 29 at the John B. Aird Gallery in Toronto.

Cleary and his wife Pat are travelling to Toronto to be present at the opening. Being included in this show is a once-in-a-lifetime event for the artists.

Work of Heart at the station

The Alberni Train Station will host many Alberni Valley crafters with their creations on Friday, Nov. 13 (1-9 p.m.), Saturday, Nov. 14 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Sunday, Nov. 15 (12-4 p.m.).

Crafters include Aini Kinoch (country ornaments), Andrea Anderson (photography), Shirley Folka (tole painting) and Tina Frew (jewellery).

Season passes for all three Timbre! concerts (Nov. 8, Dec. 13 and Apr. 24) are available for $30 adults, $25 seniors/students and $65 family at the Rollin Art Centre, Echo Centre, Salmonberry’s at Harbour Quay and at the door.

Local artists and crafters that will be at McLean Mill from Friday, Nov. 27 to Sunday, Nov. 29 include Betty Lavertu with cotton flannel PJs, Peggy Atkinson and Maureen Lenihan with wool socks, felted hats and bags, knit hats and sweaters, Connie Milne with beaded jewellery, Ericka Ponsford with card making and Tracy Anderson with jams and jellies.
