Lavigne plays Capitol Friday

Ken Lavigne is known these days for renting Carnegie Hall so he could sing there.

But his performing career began so much earlier with the Canadian Tenors in 2004. Lavigne has been in Port Alberni with the Canadian Tenors, the Maple Leaf Tenors and Romanza. He returns Friday, Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m. with a solo show at the Capitol Theatre.

Tickets are $18 adults, $16 seniors/students and are available at the Rollin Art Centre, Echo Centre (credit cards accepted) and Somass Drugs (cash only). All tickets at the door will be $20 (cash only).

Mon cheri, go see this movie

Stephen Frears, director of The Queen and High Fidelity, continues to demonstrate his genre-defying talents with this adaptation of a Colette novel as part of the Port Alberni fall film fest.

Set in Paris in the years before the First World War, Cheri paints a picture of the romance between young Cheri (Rupert Friend) and retired courtesan Lea (Michelle Pfeiffer), with a mother-in-law to mix things up.

Cheri plays at the Paramount Theatre for a single showing on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $6 and are available at the Rollin Art Centre and the AV Museum.

We the People for posterity

Norman Silverstone was born in Montreal, where at the age of nine, his father gave him his first camera — a Brownie Starflash. His fascination has never waned, and his proficiency with the camera has included both commercial and artistic ventures.

Silverstone apprenticed with a photographer in Montreal and graduated from the now defunct Famous Photographers School in New York City.

Silverstone’s exhibit “We The People” will show at the Rollin Art Centre Gallery until Tuesday, Nov. 10. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free admission.
