Katie Muir and Tamara O’Brien were top performers for PoCo’s new TAG Sports Centre at last weekend’s Flip City Invitational gymnastics meet in Abbotsford.
An artistic gymnast, Muir grabbed gold on the uneven bars with a near flawless routine and also earned gold on vault. She finished 5th on both the beam and floor to finish with the silver medal all around in the Open National Women’s division.
TAG team member and tramplolinist O’Brien continued her winning streak with a flood of gold medals. O’Brien won gold on tumbling, trampoline, double mini trampoline and synchronized trampoline with partner Alexa McPhee, who also won gold in Novice 10-14 tumbling.
O’Brien is aiming for a Canadian team berth to the Indo Pacific Championships in Japan later this year in June. A veteran global competitor, Tamara recently returned home from the World Age Group Championships (WAGC) in St. Petersburg, Russia, where she finished ninth and 13th in the world.
TAG teammate Nicole Chow competed in the national novice level, earning gold on beam and bronze all-around. Her status allows her to continue on to the national championships to be held in Kamloops in next May.
Novice national TAG teammate and rookie Taylor Chan performed a hand clapping upbeat floor routine to earn the silver medal. She finished a solid fifth all around. Taylor will also be attending the B.C. Winter Games in Terrace next month, joining two other TAG team members, Emily Dunderdale and Kiara Kallio. TAG coach Krystal Fraser will be the team coach for the Zone 3 athletes.
Emily Robinson won the judges over with her floor choreography winning the trophy awarded for Outstanding Dance Aritstry in the P4 Novice category.
Next month, eight TAG athletes and their coach Barb Fraser will attend the Pan Am championships in Daytona Beach, Fla.
FLIP SIDE: Omega Gymnastics Academy in Coquitlam will be hosting over 240 gymnasts from across B.C. this weekend at the annual Omega Invitational meet. Canadian Senior national team member and world-class vaulter Brittany Rogers will be performing locally after having recently returned from London, England, where she placed seventh in the World Championships in the vault event finals.
