Emily Bornestig of Port Coquitlam hangs onto her hat as she gallops towards the finish line of a Pony Express mail-run race Saturday in Clearwater, about 120 km north of Kamloops. Bornestig took her riding gear to school Friday then caught the overnight bus to compete. Riders raced along a rough trail on an island on the North Thompson River and had to bring back six letters from six mailboxes attached to trees along the route. Bornestig and her mustang, Red, took first place in the Novice category.
