Hat hands Whalley ticket out of tourney

Medicine Hat Moduline Mets did something no other team was able to do at the Canadian Junior Little League championships. They beat Whalley –– twice.

The Albertans turned the trick for the second time at the event Wednesday, eliminating the defending champions from Surrey via a 5-3 victory at Blue Mountain Park.

The win advanced the Mets into last night’s final (Thursday, after The News’ deadline) versus the host Coquitlam A’s. Despite having beaten Medicine Hat twice earlier in the tournament by a staggering 19-3 aggregate and having lost 1-0 to vaunted Whalley, the A’s were focusing on simply beating their opponents regardless of their hometown and earning a berth in the upcoming World Series in Taylor, Mich.

“It doesn’t make a difference who we play,” said A’s coach Larry Park. “It’s down to seven innings of baseball, that’s it. This is the last step in the road. We’ve got to get ’er done.”

The A’s were hoping to become the third Coquitlam Junior LL team since 1981 to win the nationals.
