Cell phone-using drivers are one-handed menaces

The province will be instituting a ban on talking and texting while driving (except for hands-free talking) and the letter writer says smart drivers should have done that themselves.

The Editor,

Re. “Hands-free only for chatty drivers” (www.tricitynews.com).

The provincial government has been dithering for some time about making it illegal to use cell phones, etc. while driving and is about to become law.

I like to think the delay in implementing the law has been due to the government hoping drivers would see the light of day and quit using gadgets while driving of their own accord.

That hasn’t happened.

In about 1990, I first became aware of the problem while cycling home from work. A car pulled out of a side street turning on my left and I was startled when it had difficulty staying on its side of the road. The driver was driving one-handed and couldn’t turn the wheel enough. This afternoon (Oct. 26), something similar happened.

It is a pity that the law is required.
