The Editor,

Port Moody, Burnaby, Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam residents are being invited to participate in the preliminary design consultation open houses being held for the Evergreen Line rapid transit project.

On Sept. 5, TransLink said the Evergreen Line is on hold indefinitely. The provincial government is painting a different picture. The transportation ministry said construction on the rapid transit line will start in late 2010. Transportation Minister Shirley Bond said the government still plans to build the Evergreen Line but wouldn’t say where the money would come from, noting the ministry will meet with TransLink and the mayors to help TransLink find ways to raise its $400-million share.

Just where do they expect to find this money? I don’t know.

I do know that Port Moody Mayor Joe Trasolini and council passed a motion to amend the city’s official community plan to allow only minimal growth until transportation catches up with 15 years of development.

Thank you, Mayor Trasolini, for finally admitting that the infrastructure will not support more growth at this time. I applaud you for taking the right action.

Rosemary Small, Port Moody
