Port Coquitlam's bear bylaw discriminates against south-siders
The letter writer asks: Has anyone told garbage-loving bears about the new city of Port Coquitlam bylaw?
The Editor,
I think that Port Coquitlam's new bylaw requiring some residents to pay to retrofit their garbage bins is discriminatory.
I was taught in school that all are equal before the law but it now appears that the south side is more equal than the north side as its residents don't have to pay to keep PoCo safe from marauding bears.
Still, I will respect the law even if I can't respect the council that passed it.
But has anyone told the bears that the new bylaw refers to them? And how does it act as a deterrent? Now that all garbage cans are locked up, the poor bear that lives on my street will walk past the Meals on Wheels and go directly to the apple tree in the backyard. When he has his fill, he will walk two blocks east and feast on the blackberries growing there and then he can cross the ditch and — mmm, best of all — the beautiful blueberries.
But I'm sure our foresighted council has an answer for that. Can we expect a new bylaw that "paves over paradise and puts up a parking lot"?
