Thanks 1

The Editor,

I want to thank the nearly 200 volunteers and 6,000 participants in this year’s Terry Fox Hometown Run. The bright, sunny weather brought out great enthusiasm and high spirits, making for another excellent event.

From the words of inspiration by MC Bruce Moore to Terry’s friend, the Man In Motion Rick Hansen, to Terry’s niece Jesse taking part in the emotional flag raising, everyone was able to hear about the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope from 28 years ago. More importantly, thousands of people continued the Marathon by taking part in the Hometown Run and raising money to end cancer.

The previous Friday, the Great Canadian Headshave attracted nearly 60 participants and raised thousands of dollars. To all Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam firefighters, the credit union managers, the school kids, Tri-City News reporters Diane Strandberg and Gary McKenna, and many others who shaved their heads for this great cause: thank you.

Here’s to next year’s event Sunday, Sept. 13.

Dave Teixeira, Terry Fox Hometown Run Organizer

The Editor,

On a recent afternoon, I could not get into my building, I could not access the underground parking lot and was despondent at the loss of my fob, apartment key and miscellaneous keys of importance whilst walking in the area of Newport Village.

As I was about to take a walk around Inlet Park, I realized a purse containing my keys was missing from my fanny pack and retraced my steps to the shop. I did this several times and left my name and number with many of the shops along the way in case the purse would be found.

Two hours, later I abandoned the search and reported the matter to the police as a last resort. I then went home to prepare to have the locks changed, the fob re-programmed and other keys changed the next day.

At approximately 7 p.m., I received a call from Starbucks telling me a young man had brought my missing purse to them. He told the Starbucks employee that his 86-year-old grandmother had found the purse on the ground and brought it home. He very kindly brought it back and Starbucks called me right away.

To the lady who found the purse, thank you and your grandson for your gracious gesture, which has saved me considerable trouble and anxiety. How comforting it is to know that good, honest people are in our neighbourhood.

The Editor,

Thank you to all the people who helped my dogs and me Sept. 13.

Early in the evening, I was walking my two small dogs up Heritage Mountain Boulevard when I heard a chorus of horns. When I looked behind me, I was shocked to see a smallish bear quickly crossing the street and coming towards us. If it weren’t for all the noise, I don’t know what would have happened.

I would especially like to thank the people in the two cars who stopped and offered us a ride home. The bear might simply have wanted to play with my dogs or might have been looking for dinner. Thankfully, I’ll never know.

Jennifer Storbo, Port Moody
