Coquitlam shouldn't privatize food services
The Editor,
Re: Should Coquitlam privatize food services at the sports centre? Tri-City News Friday, Nov. 6.
The food services at the Sports Complex should continue to be operated by the city. Why is it that Coquitlam is prepared to hand this service out to a private contractor who is in the business of making a profit, instead of doing what Port Coquitlam is doing, by looking at healthier food choices at publicly owned facilities. If a private contractor does not make a profit, they leave.
This is a pretty good bargaining chip to have when they decide to change menus, hours of work, staffing levels, and the sort. The city will be left with either conceding to the demand, or having the contractor vacate. How does this provide a good service to the taxpayers and users of these facilities?
Ms. Sims hits the nail right on the head when she says that the city should be looking to improve the services currently provided, rather than taking the easy route and handing this civic service to the private sector to make a profit.
