After a two-year absence the Port Moody Farmer's Market is back to serve up weekly servings of fresh produce, baked goods, art and entertainment.
Organizer Ken Kwok decided to bring the market back to life at the popular Queen Street Plaza because his wife, an artist, had enjoyed selling her paintings and cards there.
"We were quite surprised that it didn't run the last couple of years... so we approached the city and they said nobody was running it," Kwok said. That was in May, leaving Kwok little time to sort out the necessary approvals — and get a good variety of vendors on board — in time for the summer market season.
And even though the market will only run Saturdays from Aug. 1 to Sept. 5, Kwok was able to bring together farmers, cooks and artisans selling everything from custom jewelry to photos, organic fruits and vegetables, soap, pottery, plants and flowers, seafood and packaged foods like Thai curries, salads, honey and more.
On Aug. 1 there will be live entertainment throughout the day, as well as a comedian to fill in the gaps. Kids can hang out in the children's corner with a balloon sculptor, face painting and plenty of games to keep them busy.
"We're trying to make this a real community event to benefit everybody — the vendors, the businesses nearby and the residents," Kwok said.
Starting this late in the summer Kwok admitted he's just hoping to break even, but if it proves successful he's already thinking of a Christmas market and expanding next season.
"We love this market, my wife and I love to be here," he added. "And we really want to see it running again."
• The Port Moody Farmer's Market at Queen Street Plaza runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays from Aug. 1 to Sept. 5. For more information and to sign up as a vendor check www.market-connections.com.
