Golden Spike Days organizers are soldiering ahead — with a little help from the navy — as they plan the 2010 Canada Day festivities.

Like so many other non-profits, the society learned this fall it would not be receiving its $30,000 provincial gaming grant, putting next year’s version of the Tri-Cities’ biggest community festival in jeopardy.

But after the society’s annual general meeting last week, vice-president Sally Comin said the group of enthusiastic board members will make sure Rocky Point Park is alive with Spike festivities July 1 to 4, 2010.

“The whole feeling of the meeting is that we know there’s going to be a festival,” Comin said, noting it will have a twist.

Golden Spike will be joining forces with the Port Moody Commemorative Society (PMCS), which is organizing the city’s naval centennial celebration July 3 to 5.

“We’re working in conjunction with the Golden Spike committee to make it a success,” PMCS president Jim Bodo said at Tuesday’s council meeting. The group plans to bring a navy vessel into Burrard Inlet and have it dock at Pacific Coast Terminals for public tours. There is also talk of a commemoration of the Battle of the Atlantic.

It’s still early days and neither group could say exactly how the two events will take shape that weekend, but they’re forming a joint committee to work everything out.

In the meantime, both groups need volunteers, donations and sponsorships. Contact Golden Spike organizers at office@goldenspikedays.bc.ca and the PoMo Commemorative Society at 604-469-4521.
