The race to fill the vacancy in New Westminster-Coquitlam officially began on Sunday after Prime Minister Stephen Harper called byelections in four ridings across the country.
Two local city councillors and an engineer have already begun campaigning, but will ramp up their efforts in the face of the November 9 vote.
Coquitlam Coun. Fin Donnelly will represent the NDP in the race, while Port Moody Coun. Diana Dilworth will hold the Conservative banner. Ken Beck Lee, an engineer from New Westminster is running for the Liberals and Rebecca Helps will represent the Greens.
The four are vying for the opportunity to succeed former NDP MP Dawn Black, who vacated the seat last May when she entered provincial politics.
All Canadian citizens in those districts who are at least 18 years of age on election day are eligible to vote. To vote in a federal by-election, an elector's address of ordinary residence must be in the electoral district from the first day of revision of the lists of electors, Wednesday, October 7, 2009, until election day, Monday, November 9, 2009.
