A Coquitlam RCMP officer is facing drunk driving charges after he was stopped leaving the Boulevard Casino early Friday morning.

The officer, who has not been identified, was stopped after police received a complaint shortly before 3 a.m. that a suspected drunk driver had just left the casino. Police located the suspect vehicle, determined that the driver was a member of the Coquitlam RCMP detachment and concluded he was impaired.

The suspect was taken to the Coquitlam RCMP detachment, where he provided breath samples that were in excess of the legal limit.

He was released from custody on a promise to appear; his first court appearance is in January.

The officer, who's been on the force about a year, is on desk duty while the criminal investigation, as well as an RCMP internal investigation, are underway.
